You've heard of Nothing Is Scarier, right? This trope could be called Nothing Is Sexier.
Clothing Damage is when clothes get torn off during combat. This type of Fanservice is more generally when clothing rips or falls off in non-combat related situations.
The Theiss Titillation Theory says that outfits which 'merely suggest the imminence of revelation' are teasingly sexy. If it looks like Victoria is one stiff breeze away from having all of her secrets revealed, it will certainly get your attention, if only out of morbid curiosity. But the allure is all in the teasing: it looks like we'll see something, but we never do. When the hinted-at revelation accidentally comes to pass (universally to the embarrassment of the victim and the amusement of everyone else), the tease is over. And you get this trope.

When caused by some machine or magic specifically designed to achieve that effect, see The Nudifier.
A Super-Trope to Popping Buttons and Slippery Swimsuit. See also Dress Hits Floor. Compare Defeat by Modesty. Contrast Sexy Coat Flashing. May cause a Naked Freak-Out. A disservice version might be Plumber's Crack.

Much later, in the final pages of the last chapter, a Call-Back strikes during an even bigger and more public concert: her baton catches on the strap of her dress, which completely falls off. Momoko wins, and while she's rubbing it in, the crotch of her swimsuit snaps. - Mysterious Girlfriend X: Identical Stranger Mokona, posing as Urabe and wearing her clothes, accidentally gives Tsubaki a free show when she bends down because her breasts are two to three sizes too small for Urabe's bra. When she realises this after he asked her to do it again.. boot to the head.
- From Prison School Meiko, on multiple occasions, wears clothes that are way too tight for her curvaceous figure and end up giving out and tearing at the most inopportune moments.
- Mari gives her a suffocatingly tight but more modest school uniform. Meiko thinks this is her actual punishment for the incident with Gakuto's action figure but later, when trying to goad Andre to go through the prison's fence, the uniform gives out and tears, which excites Andre enough to charge through the fence just as Mari planned.
- The back of the pants of her prison uniform tear as she's trying to quickly complete her task of digging a large hole.
- In a flashback chapter, Meiko's Sarashi audibly tears when she stands up too fast in class to answer a teacher's question.
- A-ko often in Project A-ko. When she is particularly embarrassed, one of her bra straps will slip down her shoulder, often with some of the shirt accompanying it. She also often gets into situations that become an innocent Panty Shot, not that she takes it that way.
- Happens to Rio at least once per episode in Rio -Rainbow Gate!-:
- Rio's wedding dress gets ripped at the skirt by Mint after the latter trips and grabs it at the end of episode one, much to the delight of Tom Howard. Gets followed by a Scream Discretion Shot by Rio.
- Almost happens to Rio during the virtual beach volleyball game in the giant roulette challenge in episode 2, when the top of her bikini gets undone, but somehow it gets fixed shortly after.
- One instance borders on Clothing Damage, where Rio and her childhood friend Rina are pitted battle of skeet shoot where they shoot coins. A miss by the shooter (when it's her turn) results in her (already skimpy clothing) getting undone piece by piece (in fact the first one results in an Absolute Cleavage).
- And at the end of that challenge which resulted in a draw, Rio, whose hotpants were undone in the match, ends up absentmindedly dropping them in full view of the spectators, much to her horror.
- To date, the only time she never got hit with this trope is at episode 5.
- After not being hit with this trope for how many episodes, she gets hit again; in episode 10. This time, though, she actually lampshades it.
- The DVD versions of Queen's Blade allows any nipple flashes that would naturally happen from those outfits to take place. Most noticeable with Menace's version of the second season ending, where she exposes her breasts with every step she takes.
- Episode 7a of Sakura Trick promises one in the title, and delivers: Mitsuki's bikini top falls off.
- Episode seven of Sands of Destruction deals with Morte ripping her skirt because Taupy accidentally pushed Kyrie onto her. She doesn't notice; although everyone else does, they're all too scared to tell her.
- Downplayed in a skit in episode 3 of Servant × Service. Lucy has all hooks on her bra broken, and the tension was about how her coworkers get to resolve the issue while tiptoeing around the issue itself. Eventually, Yutaka claimed Lucy had a fever because of her blush and should 'go back to rest;' the others immediately got the hint. No fanservice was even intended in the skit as she wears conservatively.
- Sgt. Frog: Whenever Natsumi gets hit with the age ray in the manga, she always gets a wardrobe malfunction. Whether reverting back her regular age, and suddenly finding herself topless in front of a crowd of nerdy guys, or losing her ski suit to an explosion, it's pretty much a given.
- Kiriko Aoi◊ in the 5th episode of Shinkon Gattai Godannar!!
- Happens all the time to Super Sonico in the many manga adaptations; about two of every three times she's wearing a bikini, her top will snap at some point. To make things worse for the poor girl, it usually happens at the worst possible moment, such as in the middle of a photoshoot, when she's in a stage giving a concert for millions, or when she's at the beach with everyone staring at her as she rides her savior dolphin back to the coast. Official artworks tend to chronicle her manywardrobe malfunctions as well; one of them even shows her bikini top and bottom snapping at the same time. The ultimate example, though, was in an episode of the anime, in which her whole costume melted in the middle of a concert. Cue her horrified scream. The last case was also an example of the trope being invoked since the costume was specifically designed to melt and leave its wearer in the buff.
- Ryoko invokes this towards Ayeka in the fourth episode of Tenchi Muyo!. The princess had just realized Tenchi was now in the girls' bath (again, thanks to Ryoko), and is caught in something of a daze by being in the baths with him. Realizing how prim, proper and utterly boring she's being, Ryoko livens things up by undoing the tie on Ayeka's towel, exposing her in front of Tenchi.
- Yoko's bra falls off◊ while she is jumping vigorously in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
- Chapter 10 of Usotsuki Paradox which has the male lead Youkadou strip the female lead Seiyuu of her bikini top leaving her topless and forcing her to hug Yukadou to avoid getting caught by her friends.
- Archie Comics:
- A story in Veronica volume 201 had the girls discover a collection of old-style bathing suits and try them out in the water. The boys didn't really appreciate the cover-everything styles.. until it became clear that the old fabric couldn't stand up to water anymore and disintegrated, leaving Betty, Veronica and the rest naked in the ocean. Heck, this even happened to Mrs. Lodge who tried out one of the suits at a pool party.
- In another Archie comic, Cheryl stole a dress that Veronica designed and wore it to a party just to laugh in her face - only to find out at that point what a bad seamstress Veronica was. The whole dress ripped apart in front of everyone. (Of course, as humiliating as that was for Cheryl, the story didn't quite end on a high note for Ronnie either..)
- A very similar incident happened with Lynn in the ALF comic, when Alf, in order to stop Willie and Kate from going down the girl's throat about her new bikini being too revealing, sews a new, stylish and more modest swimsuit for her out of the seat-covers from his spaceship. Crisis averted — until Lynn and her classmates go to the seaside and it turns out that the Melmacian fabric can take fresh water without any problems, but dissolves completely in salt water.
- In the second Lady Rawhide mini-series, Lady Rawhide's breast does actually pop out of her costume for a panel. There had been jokes ever since the character debuted about how she managed to stay in her Stripperific outfit.

Downplayed after she loses the dressing gown and only wears her silk slip, as her straps sometimes fall off, but it doesn't expose any more skin as it already does.

Of course, by the end of the scene, she ended up in the water, giving the rest of the cast and crew an eyeful and (unfortunately) requiring touching up in post-production to keep its rating.
- Kenny Everett's character Cupid Stunt was always telling Michael Parkinson (or rather a cardboard cutout of him) about intentional wardrobe malfunctions in her films. 'It's all done in the best possible taste.'

Johnny Olsen: Bob, they've given their ALL for you..
Bob: Yes..
- As Bob would put it years later:
- On that same episode, before the second-to-last One-Bid, the contestant called down almost had a similar incident. Bob said of her that she was 'the best thing to happen to this show since Yolanda!'
- Something similar happened on the Australian version in the mid-2000s. Contestant Cassandra Dillon flashed her chest while coming on down, eliciting laughter from the audience to the confusion of emcee Larry Emdur. Announcer Shawn Cosgrove downed his entire bottle of water before finally saying 'Sorry!'

- A staple of The Benny Hill Show. However contrived, you can bet that every sort of freak accidents possible will happen to the clothes of any sexy woman in most sketches (usually with a very exaggerated ripping sound) and leave her in her underwear. Though the males of the cast aren't entirely spared either, there it's purely for humor and never fanservice.
- Friends:
- In 'The One with Barry and Mindy's Wedding', Rachel accidentally gets her dress tucked into her underwear during the wedding and everybody sees her butt.
- Years later, in The One with Rachel's New Dress, thanks to various misunderstandings Rachel ends up wearing her skimpy nightie to dinner with Joshua and his parents. - In episode 2 of the ABC series GCB, headcheerleader Alexandra gets a boob job and ignores her mother's advice that 'you can't wear last year's uniform with this year's breasts'. She then plays a prank on some less popular girls just before a pep rally, and justice inevitably strikes when her top pops open◊ (warning: contains excessive pixellation) in front of the whole school. Clip available here.
- One Monty Python's Flying Circus sketch ('Scott of The Sahara') has the female lead of a movie being filmed run from a monster and get various articles of clothing caught and ripped off by the cacti she passed while fleeing. This is made absurd by the fact that the cacti are so far apart that she has to obviously go out of her way to get her clothing caught on them.
- In 'Snip' from Modern Family, a pregnant Gloria has insisted on her usual clothes despite an increasing baby bump and body fat. Near the end of the episode, after Manny has told her she can't deny that she looks pregnant, her sweater suddenly pops open and her tight pants rip. - In an episode of The Brittas Empire, the flaky Helen Brittas (Pippa Heywood) has to run across the leisure centre reception area in a dressing gown. It very briefly flaps open as she runs and reveals that she is completely naked underneath. This was not intended and as the wardrobe malfunction only lasts for less than a second and was recorded before freeze-frame technology became standard on video players, it was allowed to stand on the released version. It does appear to have been edited out of later released versions, however.

As it happened, the show was being aired live on Good Morning America, and despite a five-second broadcast delay, the censors failed to notice until it was too late. ABC issued an apology for the oversight.
- The 'daring' Dominique Auxilly dress that Adrienne Bailon wore to a March 2012 concert is a perfect example of how the Theiss Titillation Theory can backfire spectacularly to cause one of these. She was posing for photographers on the red carpet when a gust of wind suddenly revealed that she wasn't wearing anything underneath.
- Ryu Hwayoung of the South Korean girl groupT-ara suffered a malfunction during a live performance of the single 'Lovey Dovey' on a music show when the non-seethrough portion of her costume slipped down just as the camera zoomed in for her solo.

- Italian actress Veronica Maya did a performance of Madonna's 'Material Girl' on the 7 November 2014 episode of the Tale e Quale Show, and nearly as soon as she took the stage her low-cut strapless pink dress rapidly began to slip even lower. She noticed what was happening and tried to tug it back into place, but as she kept dancing and flung her arms wide, it came right back down and completely exposed her breasts. She tried to tuck herself back in and continue the performance, but couldn't keep herself covered for more than a few seconds at a time, and finally, the conductor rushed on stage to interrupt the show. - The January 1940 cover of The New Yorker is a Peter Arno cartoon with a dancing couple just about to have one of these.
- This can be invoked in multiple cases, the most common is when a wrestler grabs their opponent's tights to claim a victory by making it harder to kick out. Another common variant occurs during the Sunset Flip: a wrestler somersaults over his opponent and grabs his legs to dry and pull him down with him. If the opponent is too stable to be pulled down, pulling the tights and exposing their ass is an easy way to get him off balance.
- In her autobiography The Fabulous Moolah, (who was a part of what may have been the second generation of female professional wrestlers in the Americas) recounts one night in Oklahoma City in the early 1950s when a man lurking in the crowd tried to stab her for kissing a male wrestler who was clearly non-white (apparently not knowing or caring about Moolah's own Native American heritage). He succeeded only in ripping off her bikini top with the knife, leaving her topless, before he was tackled by arena security. To calm down the crowd, Moolah immediately remarked: 'Well, he saw what he wanted to see, didn't he?'
- In 1987, during the match that turned Randy Savage into a face (after several years of being a heel), the strap of Miss Elizabeth's dress broke when the Honky Tonk Man shoved her to the mat. - The secondSweet Georgia Brown became infamous for these within a year of working for USWA in 1989, though most cases were 'intentional' along the lines of Clothing Damage and Jacqueline also suffered a definitely accidental one during her match with Disco Inferno at WCW Halloween Havok. Perhaps most infamously was her match at WWC's 22nd Aniversario against La Tigresa, as it was already an evening gown match where the goal was to remove it from the opponent and Jacqueline still managed to have a wardrobe malfunction without actually losing the gown or match.
- The ladder match at WrestleMania X had Shawn Michaels getting the top of his tights pulled down, flashing the crowd a full moon. He then delivered an elbow drop off the ladder with his cheeks exposed.

At one point, Dreamer had Francine set up for a piledriver and was turning around to each side of the ring so everyone could get a glimpse of what was about to happen, which was Dreamer hitting the piledriver and Francine's breasts falling out. Raised to funny because, right when Dreamer grabbed Francine's hair to set her up for the move, announcer Joey Styles said, 'And Dreamer has seen enough of the Head Cheerleader.'

- Defied, but in between traveling between Deep South Wrestling and PGWA in 2007, Melissa Coates experimented with ring gear that ended up having her fighting off wardrobe malfunctions as much as pin and submission attempts.
- Awesome Kong suffered this during an over-the-top Battle Royale to determine TNA's first 'knockout' champion, which was included on the Bonus Disc for their Video Game. As if the name wasn't enough of a clue, she is a giant black woman whose role is the Monster Heel and is as far removed from the Ms. Fanservice role as a woman in wrestling could be.
- At the 10-diva tag match at Survivor Series 2007, Michelle McCool has an unfortunate Nip Slip and actually wrestles for a whole minute with her nipple exposed. The DVD doesn't actually edit it out.

- On Aug. 9, 2016, the straps of Eva Marie's top broke, but she was able to stop it from falling off with her arms in time. The referee stopped the match and covered her with a towel, to the boos of the crowd. This was staged as Eva's character at the time was a cowardly heel who would come up with lame excuses to avoid having to fight.
- Miss Kitty's infamous flashing at the 1999 Armageddon PPV was a case of this. According to her, the plan was for Sgt Slaughter to immediately run in and cover her with the towel when she removed her bra. And the camera behind her was supposed to be live, creating a Toplessness from the Back situation where only a few people in the crowd would see anything. Sgt Slaughter was late coming in with his cue, and the wrong camera went out live - resulting in Miss Kitty unknowingly flashing her breasts live on TV.

- Happens every occasionally in figure skating:
- Happened to the East German figure skater Katarina Witt at an exhibition in Paris in 1988, when her costume slipped during a long spin. Apparently, she hadn't had a chance to test the new costume before the performance. note
- At the 2009 European Figure Skating Championships, during the compulsory dances, where each ice dance couple does the exact same routine, Russian ice dancer Ekaterina Rubleva's dress strap snapped, causing her breast to be exposed on international TV. She and partner Ivan Shefer were then obliged to finish the dance that way to avoid losing points, which they did.
- Perhaps the most costly instance was at the 2018 Olympics, when Gabriella Papadakis's neck strap snapped at the beginning of her and Guillaume Cizeron's short dance, causing her top to slowly slip down during the performance. It threw them off enough it may well have cost them the gold medal; they lost by less than a point.
- Italian Olympic swimmer Flavia Zoccari was disqualified from an event at the 2009 Mediterranean Games when her full-body swimsuit split open just before the race and exposed her rear.

It's only until the final panel that it's revealed Gracie has forgotten to change into her school uniform and is still in her undies◊.

![Nip Nip](/uploads/1/2/3/7/123712605/608368966.gif)
- There's more than one kind of wardrobe malfunction◊.
- There are entire softcore porn websites dedicated to the phenomena, including an entire subgenre for 'Nip Slips', which is when an actress's dress slips just enough out of the way that some of her nipple can be seen, but it doesn't shift so significantly that she feels it happen. And Vapor Wear upskirts. Another common occurrence is when thin dresses unexpectedly become revealing when under the blaze of lights and flash photography.

- Bellboy Donald (1942): Donald loses his entire bellboy uniform as a troublesome child sticks part of it between an elevator door..and the elevator moves, completing the deed. Hand covers crotch and deep blush immediately follows.
- Tea for Two Hundred (1948): Donald digs for food stolen by ants inside their hole. Rather pull the food out, they pull his entire outfit in, leaving him above ground completely naked. Moment of embarrassment follows.
- Hook, Lion, and Sinker (1950): As Donald is cooking in his kitchen, two lions steal fish stacked on the windowsill, one at a time, bucket brigade style. Having run out of fish but assuming there is more to steal, the next items blindly grabbed —in order and sequentially — are his chef's hat, matching bib, his entire outfit, Donald himself, and the gun he was holding before being tossed out the window. Cartoon logic in this backward order; after the brigade is out of items, Donald, once again fully clothed and armed, greets them on the far end.
- Family Guy has David Hyde Pierce's scrotum falling out during the Emmys, in a thinly disguised parody of the Trope Namer.

- In Pet Pals, Madame's dress gets ripped off after Top Hat accidentally closes the car door on it. She is then subjected to humiliation by being flashed by photographers. This may or may not be an enforced example since part of the scene appears in the trailer and it happens 6 minutes into the movie itself.
- Kim Possible: Sidekick Ron Stoppable's falling-pants running gag.
- The Trope Namer was the famous incident when Justin Timberlake 'inadvertently'note exposed Janet Jackson's breast at the 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII Halftime Show. It revealed a touch of Double Standard — Jackson was accused of corrupting youth with a half second of her bare breast, but very few (if any) people complained that Timberlake managed to cause it by, effectively, pantomiming a form of sexual assault. note Additionally, Janet gets more blame than Justin due to the rumor that, although it was planned, all that would have been seen was her bra.. had she agreed to wear it. Finally, the offending moment transpired so quickly in Real Time that many people didn't notice it until the news media replayed it over and over. Purely to show their disapproval, of course.
- 'U.S. Children Still Traumatized One Year After Seeing Partially Exposed Breast On TV'
- Interestingly, it was this event and the difficulty of finding video clips of it (as well as clips of the 2004 South Asian tsunami) that inspired the founders of YouTube to create that site in 2005, according to a 2006 interview with co-founder Jawed Karim, despite YouTube later going on to restrict such content for the purpose of increasing ad revenue.

She says she didn't even notice it until her publicist ran over and put her dress strap back on.
- Before a Stanley Cup Playoff game in 1997, Lucy Lawless performed the national anthem wearing a strapless red top. When she lifted her arm in celebration at the end of the song, she inadvertently popped out, much to her embarrassment.
- In 2001, the snap on Carla Sanchez's top broke while she and her New York University dance team were performing in a national competition. She continued to dance, topless, believing her team would be penalized if she broke ranks to cover up. (The judges later said they would not have deducted points.) The NYU team won its division. The incident was referenced in a 2002 USA Today article on cheerleading as a sport and industry.
- During the Rio de Janeiro Carnival Angela Bismarchi's 'tapa-sexo' (tiny piece of material covering the genital area) fell off, leaving her fully nude.
- Cosplayers sometimes have these. Most commonly these happen when their costumes fall apart, although there have been some more classic examples.
- Along those lines, fursuiters have heads that prevent them from seeing anything that happens to their suit. For example, if a seam is poorly sewn and rips exposing clothing/body underneath, they may be walking around with no idea about it until someone else tells them. This happens very rarely, but if it does, it's wise to tell them as soon as possible.
- During Garbage's performance at the 1996 VH1 Fashion Awards, Shirley Manson had one.I laughed my head off. But my breasts didn't fall out-I think that's people's wishful thinking. I think people may have very, very briefly seen a nipple. But you know, when did a nipple do any harm? I do have nipples. There, you can tell the world.

So she wrote a song to them, which Deconstructed the trope then proceeded to outright Defy the trope by stripping completely naked on stage. (Link NSFW).
- A little-known Korean actress named Yeo Min-Jeong (여민정) briefly made headlines following the 2013 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival after her dress slipped down and exposed her chest twice as she walked the red carpet. A brief flurry of speculation ensued regarding whether the entire incident was intentional on her part since footage clearly shows that she touched the strap in question a moment before each slip, and she was wearing flesh-colored tape over her breasts at the time.

Momoko wins, and while she's rubbing it in, the crotch of her swimsuit snaps. In the next chapter/episode, Momoko confiscates the pictures that Takeda took that day.. and gives them to the school newspaper.
